The fact that you didn't feel restricted kind of indicates that something's a bit off, maybe it's the 2p aspect that makes that happen but I always feel like I have terrible cards in that game. Using several actions to make a coal mine can be worse than to use those actions to build point generating buildings. Also, you want to use someone elses resources, actions are just as much a currency as money, iron and coal. Reread the rules, you don't get to choose which resources you take, you have to take the closest, at least when it comes to coal and you always have to pick from the board first, not the market. Were my expectations too high? Does the game get exponentially better at higher player counts? Or has the strategy just not clicked enough yet and this is a slow grower.? Or should I just retreat back to worker placement?

What am I missing? Surely this game is number 6 on BGG for a reason. The reset before the rail phase felt like almost a reset of the game (diminishing my sense of progress) and exchanging money with the bank to stack up on the turnorder track just felt. was never forced to use my resources thereby limiting interaction between us. Unlike other games I've played I didn't ever feel restricted in my choices (location or resource), even with the two player variant removing locations on the board and increasing the number of rounds. Of course the first few moves were a bit clunky with frequent reviews of the rule book (side note: I wish they had included more examples of play, particularly for links) but we eventually got the hang of it and played a fairly successful first game with two players.Īt the end of the game and despite my win, I couldn't help but feel very flat about the game. I set up the game with my equally game obsessed S.O. On a delightful Saturday afternoon I finally ripped open the shrink wrap of the surprisingly compact box and sat in the sunshine reviewing the instructions with glee - it was certainly the weight of game I was expecting and on first read it sounded similar in some ways to one of my favourite games, Great Western Trail. I had been anticipating my first game of Brass Birmingham so much (potentially too much), as it had been sitting on my shelf of shame for months before I finally had the time to sit down and have the first play. Appreciate all of the help with navigating a different style of game for me. I may have lost the next game but enjoyed it WAY more. My SO took this advice too and it made for a much tighter game. Thank you for all of the great advice! Game two I fixed my era error (being able to build more than one building in a location in the rail era) but perhaps even more importantly I focused on being part of the economy and getting sh** done in the canal era to have some 2+ level buildings.
